Before you begin

Gather your supplies

  • Seeds from your tested variety
  • Two clean containers with drainage
  • Seed-starting mix, water and labels

Use what you have. Purchases are optional and do not affect learning rewards.

Care and safety

Use clean containers and follow the seed packet. Wash hands after handling soil. Do not eat experimental seedlings or moldy material.

Prerequisite

This activity builds on Test a seed batch. Read it first and use your earlier observations when working through this activity.

The experiment

Viability is only the first requirement. Consistent depth, moisture, temperature and oxygen turn a seed test into a repeatable growing protocol.

  1. Use your seed-test percentage to choose an equal sowing count for groups A and B. Label both and follow the packet depth.
  2. Give both groups the same growing medium, light, temperature and measured water. Keep moist without waterlogging.
  3. Count emerged seedlings daily. Photograph from the same angle and record at least three observations over 48 hours or more.
  4. Calculate emerged seedlings ÷ seeds planted × 100. Compare that result with your viability test and explain the difference.
