Before you begin

Gather your supplies

  • Seeds from one packet
  • Two paper towels and two reusable containers or bags
  • Water, labels and a marker

Use what you have. Purchases are optional and do not affect learning rewards.

Care and safety

Wash hands after handling seeds. Discard moldy seeds and do not eat anything used in the experiment.

Foundation activity

No prerequisite.

The experiment

A germination test estimates the share of a seed batch capable of beginning growth. Repeated groups help reveal natural variation and handling differences.

  1. Count the same number of seeds into groups A and B. Moisten two paper towels so they are damp but not dripping, then label each group.
  2. Wrap each group in its own towel and place both in the same warm location. Keep the seed variety, temperature and moisture alike.
  3. Check at the same time each day. Count seeds showing a root and record at least three observations over 24 hours or more; continue for the variety’s expected germination time.
  4. Calculate viable seeds ÷ seeds tested × 100 for each group. Use the result to decide how densely you would sow the next mission.
